Hello Reader In this newsletter:
Business = Heart + Brain | Reflections | TipsMoney, but not only pleaseMaking results all about the money gives me the ick. Yes, I know—I tend to be an idealist. Feed me with ideas, love, and intellectual challenges, and I’m good to go. But when six-figure results used to feel impressive, now they just give me the ick. Money is a reality of life. It helps us sleep better at night and brings comfort and security. But money is a means to an end. Most entrepreneurs and business owners I know want more money to elevate their quality of life: to spend more time with family, to feel proud of providing for their loved ones, and to achieve self-accomplishment—not just for the sake of having it. So, here are my two cents: making the messaging of an offer all about monetary results is lazy marketing (there, I said it). Maybe those business owners who flaunt testimonials with big financial wins have clients who only care about that. Or maybe they don’t know their clients well enough to understand their deeper desires. And it makes their marketing sound sleazy (hello, bro marketing!). How to do this better? Make us dream! Speak to our deepest desires. Everyone wants the same thing:
—however that translates for each of us. So yes, talk about the money. But not just that. Grand Life HorizonsStories of rejection & businessLast week, I watched Love is Blind UK, in which one participant talked a lot about being adopted and how it affected her relationships. Her story was one of rejection: her mom abandoned her, not wanting to raise her. A few days later, my family visited me, and I had to face my own story of rejection. I had a very emotional conversation with my sister, which stirred old feelings and emotions around my role and place in the family constellation I grew up in. It was tough to go through it after all the work I had done to overcome it. While processing that conversation & the emotions that awakened from it, it became clear to me that I do what I do because I feel that I don’t belong and constantly feel misjudged. My acts and behaviors in this family are almost always misinterpreted as having bad intentions. They don’t trust that I am a good person with good intentions. Instead, it will always be questioned, and I will always have to prove it. It was the exact reason why I dove into my business for the past 3 years. I needed it to be where
People would see me for me. And they would like me for me. It wasn’t healthy (hello, co-dependency!). But it all made sense. When I realized that, I felt desperate: will this story of rejection ever go away? After a heartfelt evening conversation with my husband and a good night's sleep, I decided it wasn’t the end. My story of rejection wasn’t the story in itself. But just like every hero story, it was a catalyst for something to happen—for a change to happen. It was the story that broke me so it could become the stepping stone for the real story—the one with a happy ending—the one where I get to become who I am supposed to be. That participant of Love is Blind UK could have chosen to see her story differently instead of locking herself into that narrative. Her story of rejection could have been a story of choice:
And my story of rejection is actually one of self-actualization. One of belonging. One of becoming. It's the story of my business, myself, and, one day, my legacy. It’s a big story, and I’ll be happy to share it with you one day. Your turn - Reflection/Journaling prompt:What story do you feel defines you? A theme that keeps coming back?
